How to Find an Officiant Who Writes a Personalized Ceremony in Wisconsin
To find an officiant who writes original ceremonies in Wisconsin, look for a pro who writes beautifully, speaks well, and asks really specific questions about your relationship. You should also vibe with them, because this person is going to be standing right next to you on your wedding day.
I'm Schwa Potter, a Broadway actor turned professional wedding officiant in Milwaukee, with 500+ ceremonies performed since 2015. Every Signature Ceremony I lead is written from scratch for one couple, whether your day is big and celebratory or small and intimate.
Should a friend or family member write and lead your ceremony?
A friend or family member can be a wonderful choice if they're a strong public speaker, a strong writer, and know how to put a ceremony together.
Most couples ask someone close because they love them and that person knows them well. That's a beautiful reason, but it only covers part of the job. Before you ask, think about three things:
- Public speaking: Can they hold a room full of people while their own emotions are running high?
- Ceremony structure: Do they know how a ceremony fits together from the processional to the pronouncement?
- Focus: Can they keep the words on the two of you? A ceremony is all about the couple, and someone close to you may slip in more of their own thoughts and feelings than you expected.
Hiring a pro also lets the people you love sit back and have fun. My own brother-in-law didn't ask me to officiate his wedding so I could enjoy the day.
What should you look for in a professional officiant?
Look for someone you vibe with who also knows exactly what they're doing. You really need both. A wonderful writer you don't connect with or a sweet person who can't run a ceremony will each leave something missing.
- Connection: Talk to them before you book. Every couple I work with gets a call first, by phone or video, so we can get your questions answered and make sure it feels right.
- Writing: Ask who writes the ceremony and where the words come from.
- Delivery: Watch or listen to them speak if you can. I spent 30+ years as a professional performer, including Broadway's Mary Poppins, and that training shapes how a ceremony lands.
- Legal follow-through: Ask who handles the license afterward. I return your signed license to the county clerk within 3 days.
What should an officiant ask you to write an original ceremony?
An officiant should ask specific questions about your relationship, because specific answers make a ceremony impossible to reuse. Both partners fill out my questionnaire, and these are a few of the questions on it:
- When did you know this was the one?
- What makes them laugh? Be specific!
- How do they balance or complement you?
- What does being with them feel like?
- Any inside jokes, quirks, or nicknames to mention?
From your answers, I pull the moments, the phrases, and the way you each describe the other. Then I weave them together in the tone you want.
That's why guests so often assume I've known a couple for years, and it's my favorite compliment. One parent wrote in a Google review, "Many of our guests asked if Schwa was a friend of my son's."
How can you tell an original ceremony from a template?
An original ceremony is full of details that could only belong to the two of you. When you read a draft, ask yourself whether another couple could use it by swapping in their names. If they could, ask for more of your story in it.
You can also learn a lot before you book by asking three questions:
- How do you learn our story?
- Who writes the ceremony?
- When will we see a draft, and can we make changes?
Here are my answers: your questionnaire, me, and 6 to 8 weeks before the wedding, with time to go back and forth.
What does an original ceremony cost with Acting Officiant?
My Signature Ceremony is $950, tax included, for an original ceremony of 15 to 25 minutes that tells your love story. Rehearsal Coordination is available for $150. Travel is free within 30 miles of Milwaukee, with a small travel fee beyond that.
If that sounds like a fit, see how the Signature Ceremony works or check whether I'm available on your date.
Frequently asked questions
Can a friend or family member legally marry us in Wisconsin?
It depends on whether they meet Wisconsin's requirements for who can perform a marriage. Ask your county clerk before you ask your friend, so everyone knows what the role requires.
How soon will we see our ceremony draft?
Schwa Potter sends Signature Ceremony drafts 6 to 8 weeks before the wedding, so there is time to go back and forth. With short notice, a Signature Ceremony can be done with one to two weeks of notice.

Schwa writes each Signature Ceremony from the questionnaire both partners fill out. You also talk with him by phone or video before you book, so you can ask questions and make sure it's a fit.
