Milwaukee Wedding Officiant | Schwa Potter
Your ceremony, your way. Personalized weddings across Wisconsin.
Meet Schwa Potter
Hi, I'm Schwa Potter. I'm a professional actor, Broadway veteran, and ordained minister who has been officiating weddings since 2015.
Your ceremony is the first moment of your celebration. It sets the tone for everything that follows. I believe it should have your guests feeling the love, ready to laugh, shedding a tear, and excited to party all night long. Whether you're planning a quick elopement or a unique and original ceremony, I handle the details so you can focus on each other.
Known professionally in the theater world as Shua Potter, I performed in Mary Poppins on Broadway and have 30+ years of stage experience. I bring that same poise, projection, and presence to your wedding (minus the stage fright).
What Couples Are Saying

Frequently Asked Questions
What areas of Wisconsin do you serve?
I offer Quickie Ceremonies in Milwaukee and surrounding counties (Waukesha, Ozaukee, Washington, Racine, Kenosha). For Signature Ceremonies, I travel anywhere in Wisconsin and nationwide.
How much does a wedding officiant cost in Milwaukee?
My Quickie Ceremony is $300. My Signature Ceremony is $800. Both include marriage license guidance and filing. Travel fees apply for locations more than 30 miles from Milwaukee ($1/mile).
Can you do a last-minute wedding?
Yes. I've performed ceremonies with as little as 24 hours notice, contingent on when the couple can acquire a marriage license from the county clerk.
Do you officiate LGBTQ+ weddings?
Absolutely. I officiate for all couples who are 18+ and in love, regardless of what they look like, who they love, or how they identify.
Can you blend two cultures or religions in one ceremony?
Yes, and I love doing it. I've created ceremonies that weave together different cultural traditions, religious elements, and family customs. Whether you want something traditional, nontraditional, or a creative mashup of both backgrounds, I'll work with you to make it feel authentic to your relationship.
Do you offer religious ceremonies?
My Quickie Ceremony is nonreligious. My Signature Ceremony can be religious, spiritual, or nonreligious. Your choice.
What happens after the ceremony?
I file your signed marriage license with the county clerk within 3 days. You can then request your certified marriage certificate from the Register of Deeds.
Do you attend the rehearsal?
Rehearsal attendance is available for an additional $150 (plus travel fee if more than 30 miles from Milwaukee).
Do you have an office I can visit?
I'm a mobile officiant with no public office. I travel to your ceremony location throughout Milwaukee and southeastern Wisconsin. We handle all planning via phone, video call, or email, and I come to you on your wedding day.
What makes you different from other Milwaukee wedding officiants?
I'm a Broadway-trained actor with 30+ years on stage, including Mary Poppins on Broadway. I bring that same presence, projection, and storytelling ability to your ceremony. 300+ weddings, 48 five-star reviews, and guests regularly ask couples how long they've known me. That's the kind of ceremony I love creating.
Why hire a professional officiant instead of asking a friend?
A professional keeps the ceremony moving, projects to every guest, and handles the unexpected with a smile. I've done this 300+ times, and I still get choked up at the good parts. Your friend gets to relax and enjoy the party.
What if we don't know what we want for our ceremony yet?
Most couples don't, and that's totally fine. I'll walk you through every option and build around what feels right to you. There's no wrong answer, and no pressure. It's your wedding. Do it however you want.

Quickie Ceremony FAQ
Can I add my own vows to the Quickie Ceremony?
Yes. The ceremony is nonreligious by default, but you're welcome to add your own personal vows. I'll incorporate them into the script.
Why isn't this available on Saturdays after 1pm?
Saturdays are my busiest days for Signature Ceremonies, which take more time. Quickie Ceremonies are available Saturday mornings or any other day of the week.
Can you do this at my house or backyard?
Absolutely. I come to you. Your living room, backyard, a park, a brewery, an Airbnb, wherever you want. Milwaukee doesn't do courthouse ceremonies, so think of me as your personal courthouse alternative.
How fast can we get married?
If you already have your Wisconsin marriage license, I can marry you as soon as today. If you don't have your license yet, you'll need to apply at a county clerk's office (3-5 day waiting period, waivable for $25).
Do we need witnesses?
Yes. Wisconsin requires two witnesses over 18. They'll sign the marriage license along with you and me.
What do you wear?
I match your vibe. Casual backyard elopement? I'll dress down. City hall alternative with nice clothes? I'll wear a suit. Just let me know your dress code.

How I Write Your Ceremony
Step 1: You fill out my questionnaire. After booking, I send you guided questions about your relationship: how you met, your first date, the proposal, inside jokes, what you love about each other.
Step 2: I write your ceremony from scratch. Using your answers, I craft a ceremony that could only work for you and your unique love story.
Step 3: You review and we revise. Unlimited revisions until every word feels right.
Step 4: Wedding day. I arrive knowing your story by heart. Your guests will ask how long we've known each other.
The difference: Most officiants read a script they've used hundreds of times. I write a ceremony I've never performed before and will never perform again. It's yours.
Who Books the Signature Ceremony?
Couples who want their ceremony to sound like them not a template
Couples with unique stories - how you met, what you've overcome, why you work
Interfaith or multicultural couples - I've blended Catholic & Evangelical, Taiwanese & Southern, Wiccan & Pagan, and many other combinations
Anyone who's sat through a boring wedding and thought "I want something better"
Destination weddings - I've officiated all over the USA including NYC, Malibu, and Disney World
If you want your guests to say "that was the best ceremony I've ever seen," this is for you.

Make It Yours
Religious, Spiritual, or Nonreligious: Your ceremony, your beliefs. Prayers, blessings, scripture, spiritual elements from any tradition, or completely secular.
Unity Ceremonies: Sand ceremony, candle lighting, handfasting (Celtic hand-tying), ring warming, or create something unique.
Cultural Traditions: I love blending traditions from different backgrounds.
Custom Vows: Write your own and I'll help you structure them.
Destination Weddings
I've officiated weddings in Kentucky, New York City, Malibu, Nahant (Massachusetts), Nashville, Disney World, Vermont, and San Francisco. Travel fees apply.
Signature Ceremony FAQ
How long does the ceremony writing process take?
Plan for 4-6 weeks from questionnaires to final script. Tighter timelines possible.
What if we don't know what we want?
That's what the questionnaires are for. I ask the right questions to draw out your story and preferences.
Can we include family members in the ceremony?
Absolutely. Readings, blessings, unity ceremony participation, ring presentations, family vows, walking you down the aisle choreography.
What if we want to blend two religions?
This is one of my favorite things to do. Jewish and Catholic, Hindu and Christian, or any other combination.
Do you attend the rehearsal?
Rehearsal attendance is available for +$150 (plus travel fee if over 30 miles). Highly recommended for larger weddings.
What happens if something goes wrong on wedding day?
In 300+ ceremonies since 2015, I've never missed a wedding. With 30+ years of stage experience, I'm calm under pressure.

Non-Religious Wedding Ceremony in Wisconsin
A non-religious ceremony puts you and your partner at the center, with words that reflect your unique love and relationship. No scripture, no obligations, no cookie-cutter script. Just your love story, told your way.
What Is a Non-Religious Wedding Ceremony?
A non-religious (also called secular or non-denominational) ceremony skips the religious conventions. Instead, the focus is on your relationship, your promises to each other, and creating a memorable moment that reflects who you are as a couple. You choose the tone and vibe of the script plus every element. Your ceremony, your rules.
What's Included in a Non-Religious Ceremony?
Every ceremony I perform is written from scratch. Here's what you can expect:
A grounding welcome
A glimpse into your love story
Personalized vows
Custom ring exchange
Unity ceremony
A perfect pronouncement
Advice all along the way
Marriage license guidance
You decide what stays and what goes. There's no required format, no mandatory elements, and nothing you have to include just because "that's how it's done."
Who Chooses a Non-Religious Ceremony?
Couples who aren't religious and want a ceremony that reflects that honestly
Couples who want to purposefully flip tradition on its head
Interfaith couples who'd rather celebrate what they share than pick one tradition
LGBTQ+ couples who want a ceremony built around their relationship, not around an institution
Anyone who sat through a generic or boring ceremony and thought "I want something better"
There's no wrong reason. If you want a ceremony that couldn't work for anybody but you, you're in the right place.
Quickie or Signature? Two Options.
Quickie Ceremony - $300
Short, sweet, and meaningful. 5-7 minutes with a pre-written nonreligious script. Perfect for elopements, courthouse alternatives, or couples who want to keep it simple. Add your own vows if you'd like.
Signature Ceremony - $800
Fully custom, written around your love story and vision. 15-25 minutes. You get unlimited script editing, personalized vows, unity ceremonies, and a ceremony your guests will talk about long after the reception ends.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can we still include spiritual elements without being religious?
Yes. You can include anything you like! This is your ceremony, your way.
Do you perform ceremonies for LGBTQ+ couples?
Absolutely! No matter how you identify, what you look like, or who you love, I'm here to help you get married in style.
How personalized is the ceremony?
For Signature ceremonies, I write the entire script based on your story, your vision, and your words. For Quickie ceremonies, the script is pre-written but still warm, romantic, and nonreligious.
Do we need witnesses?
Yes, you need two witnesses who are 18+ to sign the license alongside you and your officiant.
Can we get married outside?
Absolutely. Parks, backyards, rooftops, lakefronts - anywhere you have permission to be.
How far in advance should we book?
As early as possible, especially for June through October. I also accommodate last-minute ceremonies with as little as 24 hours notice if you have your marriage license.

How fast can I book a Quickie?
As fast as you can get your paperwork together! Text me at (414) 375-9838 to check availability.

Nope. The vows are prewritten so you can simply say "I Do!" If you want to write and recite your own vows you are welcome to.
Can we do this in a Milwaukee park?
Yes. Wisconsin state parks allow small ceremonies for free (no permit needed). Milwaukee County parks technically require permits even for small elopements, so state parks are your best bet.

How to Get Married in Wisconsin: The Quick Guide
Free Wisconsin marriage license guide from an officiant with 300+ ceremonies.
The Basics
Both partners must apply together, in person, at any Wisconsin county clerk's office. You can get your license in any county and get married in any county.
Before your appointment, you'll need: your officiant's name and contact information, your wedding date, and the county where your ceremony will take place.
License is valid for 60 days. 3-5 day waiting period after applying (waivable for $25 in most counties). Must be 18+ to marry without parental consent.
What to Bring to Your Appointment
Both partners need: valid photo ID (driver's license, passport, state ID, or military ID), certified birth certificate (government-issued, not the hospital keepsake), Social Security number (you don't need the card, just the number), proof of residency from any state or country.
If you've been married before: bring your certified divorce decree or death certificate.
My #1 County Recommendation: Dane County
100% virtual appointments via Zoom. No driving to a courthouse. Fee: $120 (credit/debit accepted). Waiting period: 4 days (waivable for $25). You can apply in any county and get married in any county.
Other County Quick Reference
Milwaukee: $110 ($114.50 card), 4 days waiting, no courthouse ceremonies. Waukesha: $110, 3 days, appointments required. Racine: $110 cash only, 5 days. Kenosha: $110 ($114.50 card), 4 days. Jefferson: $110, 3 days, offers courthouse ceremonies. Sheboygan: $90, 3 days, cheapest option.
After "I Do"
Your officiant files the license within 3 days of your ceremony. Within about a week of filing, you can order certified copies through VitalChek online or any county clerk's office. Order 3-5 certified copies ($20 for first, $3 each additional) for name changes, bank and insurance updates, and future legal documents.
Common Myths Busted
"We can get married at Milwaukee courthouse!" Nope. Milwaukee County issues licenses but doesn't perform ceremonies. Neither do Washington or Kenosha counties.
"Online-ordained officiants aren't legal in Wisconsin." Completely false. Wisconsin law allows any ordained minister to perform marriages. Online ordination is 100% legal statewide.
"Name changes must be done within two years." Also false. There's no time limit in Wisconsin.
Wedding Day Checklist
Must-haves: valid marriage license (check the expiration date), officiant who's legally authorized, two witnesses over 18 years old.
